Roaming in China, still censored?

$

Hi all,

Was just reading an old post on here about roaming in China and if the is any blocking of Facebook and google etc when roaming, a few people were saying everything is accessible when roaming as it bypasses the China firewall, some people were saying it applies to all internet traffic in and out of China in which case a VPN is a must.Does anyone have any recent experience? I plan on using my Vodafone $7 per day roaming while in China on my NZ plan, will I still be able to access Facebook and Gmail and other common things which are blocked in China?

Thanks,

Registered Point to Point Map

Hey guys/gals.

I used to use Mark Hansen's wireless map quite a lot, but noticed that it's stopped since Google shut down Fusion Tables.

Given I already have all the RSM data that I use to generate the Cell Towers layer on GIS Geek, I spent some time over the break and added a point to point layer for anyone that might be interested: https://gis.geek.nz/map/pointtopoint

I haven't done a lot of testing so if you notice any issues (with any of the layers) hit me up here.

Cheers.

Not sure where this post belongs, but anyway

I have a Vodafone prepay and have had it for donkeys years (and theres quite a bit of credit on it as i am an unsociable person), I now need to transfer that particular number to Warehouse mobile

But also I need a second Vodafone phone number.

So can i attach a new phone number to my existing Vodafone prepay account keeping the credit, and then transfer the old number to warehouse Mobile?

Cheers

Best pre-pay plan for txt?

Kai ora katou,

Having had a motorcycle stolen at the end of last year, I'm now installing a gps tracker.

The one I have ordered (yet to arrive) works by receiving/sending txt messages, and as such needs a sim card.

So I'm looking for a provider/plan.

Hopefully, It's not going to generate many messages, so cost per message is not a big issue, but I'm looking for a plan where the balance does not expire.

I've tried looking at the various websites, and quite frankly I'm getting utterly bamboozled and confused.

So do any of you experts have some suggestions?

advTHANKXance

Jim

Local 4g tower not working on MY phones but works on others

My Xiaomi Mi A2 works ok on close by 4g, getting ok speeds. In my local rural town I'm getting about 55-60 mbps. However the new tower very close to my rural house is not picked up by my phone with either a spark or Vodafone Sim.

If I put either Sim into my wife's iPhone 6 plus it's receives 4g getting about 35-40 mbps. ????

Also neither Sim works on the new tower in an iPhone 5s that otherwise picks up 4g.

Yes I reset network settings, restarted device etc.

Other neighbours and visitors have the 4g working for them or so they say.

Does anyone know why only the fairly old IPhone 6 plus should receive a specific tower signal where other phones dont?.

It's our only hope for internet here as copper is 2mbps

Thanks

SMS Spam without an unsubscribe

Hi all,

1. Does anyone know how to unsubscribe, or even if its possible? OR should I contact my telecom provider to block??

2. Is it worth reporting this, as my understanding is that by law, any unsolicited commercial communication like this should include an unsubscribe option... (unless that's only email? Hope not!)

Thanks.

Warehouse mobile data cutting out

$

Hi all,

I've been having a problem with my Warehouse Mobile data seemingly cutting out for short periods of time (less than 5 seconds, but repeatedly) on my phone.

I think this is a seperate issue to the one where the data stops working completely and my phone asks me to sign into the network (which toggling airplane mode on and off seems to fix).

Has anyone else had this problem?

Looking to change mobile provider for a medium-sized North Island business - Spark or 2Degrees?

$

I'm a consultant working with an organisation who have 10 offices scattered from Whangarei to Wellington, and have 180 phones/tablets in the hands of users.

Our people work in the back of beyond, at times, and drive long distances.

We're realistic about coverage and understand that none of the providers can get a perfect signal into every nook and cranny. We're realists.

Our offices/workbases are situated in towns/cities, but our people could be sent to the end of a gravel road to perform their work. We'd be accepting that they run out of signal as they traverse the gravel road, but we'd be keen to know that when they got back to SH1, or into town in Kaitaia, Morrinsville or Pahiatua that they'd be able to make a call and that they'd have a data connection.

Does anyone have experience of rolling out a handset fleet around the North Island, who would be willing to share their opinion of the coverage provided from Spark or 2Degrees?

My follow-up question is whether you have found the vendor good to deal with. Do they provide good customer service?

I'd appreciate any experience or opinions.

Cheers

Jo

Best network for mobile data on the Kapiti Line

I'm spending a bit of time commuting on the train between Wellington and Paraparaumu - the Kapiti Line. Currently using 2degrees for mobile data, using Huawei p30 as hotspot for my surface. Have been pretty underwhelmed with data speeds on 2d, and rather than testing a few SIMs, I figure someone else might have found which network is best?I know there are common weak spots due to topography, but have found 2d iffy between takapu road and the tunnel, and forced me to roam in paekak yesterday which was odd.TIA

VoLTE on a Kogan mobile SIM - what do I need to do to get it working?

$

I'm trying to get VoLTE working on my phone, but am not having any luck; I was hoping someone here may be able to troubleshoot the cause or confirm if they've got it working.

Kogan have confirmed that they support VoLTE (via their use of the Vodafone network)

my phone (S10+) supports VoLTE; it is running Android 10 and has the latest update installed

VoLTE is enabled on the phone

the phone is a 2Degrees unit; a post on the Voda VoLTE thread confirms that this combination (2 Deg firmware; VoLTE on the Voda network) works fine

I live and work in a 4G urban area, but at no point have I seen the VoLTE symbol on my phone

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the issue here?

Also, are there any Kogan Mobile users out there who can confirm whether they have VoLTE working?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Best NZ carrier for annual NZ visitor

My father in law visits NZ every year. He wants to have a phone for the odd text and in case he needs to make a call, but it's very low use - not a smart phone.

They have a Vodafone NZ SIM but effectively you need to pay $20 a month for prepay.

Is there a carrier that's better for this situation? Say, top up and the credit lasts a year or so until you use it?

Electronic Monitoring Feasibility Check Failure

$

Hi all,

I am hoping someone in this forum would be able to help clarify a recent failure during a feasibility check for GPS electronic monitoring. This was undertaken for a person who is seeking home detention for a case in a district court.

This same address that has failed the feasibility check was used previously 6 years ago, with a number of the neighboring properties also being used in a past few years. There are increasing reports of this happening in rural parts of the country, and a new provider has in the last year taken over the national contract providing this service.

The results show the the GPS tests failed inside the property, and the RF tests failed outside the property at a number of locations. I have the test results available if this is required, the carrier is listed as Vodafone

The location of this address has mobile coverage with both Spark and Vodafone, is in a rural town of around 400 people in Northland.

If someone could please help us understand why this address has been used previously with no issues and now is failing the feasibility test that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Definition of tethering when using 4G router

$

I am trying to set up a 4G router on my rural property. All the provider's websites say there is no coverage at my site, but actually there is. It's not pretty but there are some reasonable places where I can get 4G on my phone & friends on other providers. I don't want to use another address to get a modem + sim and then get it geoblocked when I move it there.

So I've decided to buy a cheap Skinny/Spark b315 4G router on TM and try it out with some prepay sims, and if it works ok I'll look at going for a high data mobile plan.

I noticed some allow tethering, and others not (or with an extra fee), so my question is this: if I simply put the sim with data in the b315 and connect devices to it, will the provider detect 'tethering' or not?

Thanks

Telco advice for non-profit during Covid-19

$

Kia ora,

I work for a low budget non-profit organisation, which is looking at how we can best provide our service during the Covid-19 outbreak. We have an 0800 number which clients use to contact us directly for help (the calls get distributed to many different locations). These calls get answered at different locations around the country. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak we're having to close all our offices, and I'm looking for suggestions about how we can best continue to help clients using our 0800 number. One option that I'm interested in is whether it makes sense to have all the calls going to voicemail, and get converted to emails and then we can distribute them to be answered appropriately.

I've got two questions:

1) Is there an easy/preferred way to do this?

2) Do people have any other suggestions for alternatives?

Thanks so much for any advice or suggestions!

Call cannot proceed at this time due to congestion?

Assume this is related to extra pressure from people working from home. Unable to make calls on my Vodafone mobile for the past hour, just a pre recorded message, your call cannot proceed at this time due to congestion. Is this network wide I wonder, or just my location. New Lynn, West Auckland.

Does the Cel-Fi PRO for Spark Actually Work?

$

Hi I've been looking through all the threads to see if anyone actually has one of these Cel-Fi PRO to boost a Spark signal.

We get one bar if you stand upstairs on one leg and hold your tongue right, at our house.

My wife and I both work for large companies, who use Spark, so there's no option for us to move to another provider.

I spoke to Spark and had an extremely frustrating conversation, where Mary Jane basically said, "we can't help, go and google one, but it will probably be illegal"

I asked specifically about the Cell-Fi booster (as one of the threads here said it was the only legal option) and the response was the generic, "we don't support any boosters".

So a couple of questions....

1. Are these things actually legal if you buy them from Cell-Fi (The website looks dodgey as, and it smacks of a marketing gimmick)?

2. Do they work?

Your input would be greatly appreciated before I drop $1,500 on one of these.

Thanks

Ben

Morons burning down 5G towers in UK, Virus Conspiracy

Just read a "The Verge" article about facebook groups setup to mis-inform that 5G Causes corona virus,

https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/4/21207927/5g-towers-burning-uk-coronavirus-conspiracy-theory-link

aside from the fact that its stupid, I wonder if telcos are really worried about this stuff worldwide, maybe they should try harder to get this stuff removed.

Best Mobile Provider / Plans 2020

$

Hi all.

We have currently have 2x mobiles on the $55 10GB with 2degrees.

After looking at the offerings from Spark & Vodafone, have a few questions / feedback from current users about their experience with Spark/Vodafone

Vodafone now has endless data plan for $40 pm which is slowed down. in the real world, how slow is it?

Spark gives you 4GB with a 4GB bonus for 12 mths, do they roll you over for a further 12 mths of bonus data?

This might sound like a stupid question, with VoLTE, does this give cross network HD Calling, or is it still restricted to on-net?

i would have thought 2degrees would have VoLTE by now. does anyone know if this is coming?
