Hello, I am about to live in a mobile home. We will be living and travelling through out NZ. I am a visual artist and I need to be able to upload and download video works. I am currently using a Huawei wireless broadband stick on a Telecom prepay sim at $30 for 1GB of data this is getting extremely expensive. I have enquired with the major broadband providers to see if they have any other options but so far I have not been able to find anything. Most require a fixed line.I was wondering if anyone knew any other solutions? Thank you for your timeTanya

Hi, I have some friends coming over from the UK for 3 months, and they have asked me what their best options are for calling and data while they are over here.I'm not sure what phones they have or which provider they use in the UK, have asked and waiting for a reply. Is it better they just roam, or should they get a local SIM when they get here?

why cant we have mobile plans like Ting (US) in new zealand?

I've been hearing the youtubers i watch go on about ting, from what i understand ting is a mobile carrirer in the US that caters to the budget market.i had a look on their site and i really liked how they let you pick and choose the bits you want on your plan.https://ting.com/rateswhat im really asking here is why dont vodafone, telecom (spark) and 2degrees let you build your own plan like ting?i pay for 300 minutes but i use about 10, i mostly use data and text, we could get rid of all but 50 minutes and be done with it, however this was the best way i could see to get more mobile data, witch is very important to me, but at the same time so are texts.

Minister announces draft white space licencing rules

Just received:Minister announces draft white space licencing rulesCommunications and Information Technology Minister Amy Adams has today announced draft licencing rules for the use of television white space devices in New Zealand.'Television white space offers opportunities for new ways to deliver wireless services such as broadband,' Ms Adams says.'More efficient use of the radio spectrum, such as through the use of white space, will be increasingly important as new technologies continue to drive demand for wireless frequencies.'Television white spaces are the unused frequencies between television channels. They cannot be used for other television channels without harmful interference occurring, but in many cases there is potential for them to be used for wireless broadband or other technologies. The draft rules have been designed to protect the interests of existing spectrum users - television broadcasters and wireless microphone users. White space users in New Zealand would need to gain radio licences and conform to American or European Union device standards. The draft rules are intended as an interim measure to allow users to trial white space technologies. They may be replaced by a more permanent licensing framework in the future. The draft white space licencing rules have been released for technical consultation by Radio Spectrum Management in the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. They are available at http://www.rsm.govt.nz/cms/policy-and-planning/consultation/television-white-space-licensing-rules

Casual Mobile Broadband

For a number of years we used to have a great 'casual' data service from Vodafone whereby when using a dongle modem you could get 10MB per day for $1, or 100MB for 30 days for $10.I understand that this service was terminated in March this year, and like many other telcos one has to now buy (as a minmum) a 30 day data pack, unless prepared to pay $0.50c per MB!Are there any reasonable casual/daily services available in NZ?

Cirque du Soleil Cellphone Hijack

A friend at work went to cirque du soleil over the weekend in Auckland. The show was just about to start and he was sending text. Half way through he got a message pop up on his phone (throwing him out of the SMS screen) saying to "please turn off your radio device". It didn't appear to be a text message but some sort of alert. It appears that the message was broadcast by the organisers of the show. The cirque du soleil website clearly states that you get one warning if you use your cellphone during the show, then you get ejected. Seems like the organisers of cirque du soleil really really dislike people using their mobile devices during the shows. But really is this legal? What technology would this be? It was an iPhone 5, could this be iBeacon?

Embedded 4g/3g Modem/Router with external antenna for backup WAN

Hi Folks,I am looking for a 3g/4g modem/router with a sim slot and external antenna to use as my back up connection for my existing rural Wifi WAN link. I need an external antenna as I will need to use an external log periodic antenna on the roof to boost the signal. I can see the Netcomm 3G38WV does 850/900/1900/2100 MHz UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA but is not forward compatible with LTE 1800 and 700 MHz. http://media.netcomm.com.au/public/assets/pdf_file/0008/117899/3G38WV-Spec-Sheet-white.pdfI have explored the offerings at the US 3gstore but nothing seems to cover the Telecom 3g 850Mhz bannd... For example:http://3gstore.com/product/5158_cloudgate_m2m_global_embedded_3g_4g_router.htmlFor my local towers (currently) I need 850 for Telecom (not a very contended tower) and 900 for Vodafone (a heavily contended tower) which the Netcomm will cover but I would ideally like to future proof for the 4G frequencies. Does anyone have any thoughts on what to use here?Lastly does anyone know why it is said that you need line of sight for booster antenna to work, especially the Yagis?

Cat6 or above Outdoor cable with ESD drain wire.

Hi Folks,There does seem to be rather slim pickings for NZ in this area.My runs will be 20M and these are the requirements in order of priority.

Cat6 or above - I don't want to have any question about solid 1000Mb performance.

UV stabilised jacket; PE or better - NZ sun, say no more

ESD drain wire - protecting the Ethernet modules in thunderstorms

Shielded; F/FTP S/FTP F/UTP in that order of preference - as above plus protection from interference from 12V light power adapters and power wiring.

Solid AWG24 or better conductors

Gel filled would be nice

These are the options I have come across but struggling to find anything locally save the TC Cat5e.Shireen Cat6 Outdoor - Data sheetArcFlex Cat6 Outdoor - Data sheetUbiquiti ToughCable Carrier Cat5e - Data SheetRandom unbranded Cat6 with ESD and Gel filled.

LTE and the RBI

With Vodafone rapidly expanding their LTE network, what impact will this have on the RBI (fixed wireless) service? Will the RBI services transition to include LTE (700/1800) frequencies? Will it mean increased speeds? More importantly will it mean increased data caps? I know that with wireless you're dealing with a finite resource and Vodafones move to a 30GB cap on the current RBI plan is a move in the right direction. But unfortunately it's still not quite enough to make VOD services (Lightbox, Netflix etc) feasible for those of us outside the range of fibre, VDSL, or even a decent ADSL connection.

Travelling to Australia, currently with Skinny (no roaming data available), what are my options?

$

Can anyone suggest a good option for me? I'm currently with Skinny, and am a happy customer. I'm travelling in a week to Australia for 10 days, and would like mobile data if at all possible. Unfortunately Skinny have no provision for roaming data.

So it seems my options would be:

1. Buy a new NZ SIM from Voda/Spark/2degrees and use it temporarily. This would be okay, but obviously would require a temporary phone number, not a big problem. Am a little concerned with iMessage coping with changing number and then back. Roaming rates seem ok but not brilliant.

2. Buy a new Australian SIM upon arrival. Same potential problems with iMessage? Not sure of what deals are available, or any other caveats.

3. Buy or borrow a mobile data "vodem" and use this with either a NZ or AUS SIM. A bit of a hassle to have another device but would not interfere with my exisiting SIM. Advantage that my wife would also have access to data.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Joseph

What types/bands of mobile networks are available in NZ?

Hello all,10 years ago it was simple. We had Vodafone which was GSM 900 and we had Telecom which was CDMA.Today when I look at a phone spec and it says something like:GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100I have no idea if I'll be able to use it with spark.. or vodafone...I don't care for this particular phone, but I would like to understand what type/bands of mobile network we have here in New Zealand.3G / 4G appeared since that 10 years ago mark and they do not make the classification easier. So, can you tell me what network each of Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees have? (Do Vodafone and 2degrees share the same infrastructure?)And also how come, that telecom is not GSM (or so I believe) but iPhones work just fine with them? The sim card looks exactly the same as all GSM sims I've seen.Another thing is that I've been to South Korea and Russia about a year ago, and telecom sim works in South Korea but is not detected in Russia, and it is exactly reverse for vodafone sim. Can some one explains why?Thank you in advance!

Coverage area of 65 degree horizontal beamwidth antenna?

Hello,I am wondering if someone could tell what the coverage area would be for a 65 degree panel celltower antenna? I understand that at the 65 degree edge the signal will be half of the middle beam, I would like to know how far effective/usable coverage extends from the 65 degree, giving the total area the antenna can provide coverage to? Any advice appreciated, Cheers John.
